What is Spam?
An electronic message is "spam" IF: (1) the recipient's personal identity and context are irrelevant because the message is equally applicable to many other potential recipients; AND (2) the recipient has not verifiably granted deliberate, explicit, and still-revocable permission for it to be sent; AND (3) the transmission and reception of the message appears to the recipient to give a disproportionate benefit to the sender - Mail-Abuse.org
There is also an excellent resource on Spam at Abuse.net.
How does Zentek reduce/fight Spam?
All our Web Hosting and Email servers are protected by various Spam-blocking mechanisms. This helps to reduce the clutter in your email box, and saves you time and money as you do not need to download these unwanted bulk emails to your computer.
The following Spam Block lists are used by us to help cut down on the amount of spam. The Block Lists we select are well-known to be fast acting, fair, and clear in their listing/delisting policies. Among all of the Spam Block lists, we have found the following to be the best overall:
The Spamcop Block List (SCBL) contains IP addresses which have been reported to SpamCop as carriers of spam, whether directly or indirectly. Some of these reports come from "spamtraps" (email addresses used strictly to receive spam). The reports about spam from a given system are weighted against the amount of mail from the same system to determine a spam report rate. Some systems which send spam may not be listed because they send a lot of legitimate mail also (AOL servers, for instance) - Spamcop SCBL FAQ.
ORDB (Open Relay Database) is a non-profit organisation which stores IP addresses of verified open SMTP relays. These relays are, or are likely to be, used as conduits for sending unsolicited bulk email, also known as spam - ORDB.org.
The Blitzed Open Proxy Monitor List is a DNS-based list of machines believed to run insecure proxies. These proxies have been abused in the past to either send spam or connect to an IRC network running a version of Blitzed Open Proxy Monitor, such as Blitzed (More information about the DNSBL itself). - Blitzed OPM List.
How can I stop/fight Spam?
Since we use a number of block lists, you should already receive much less Spam than regular unfiltered email accounts. However, if you do still receive any Spam, you can help by reporting it to Spamcop. Please go to Spamcop and their Spamcop Spam Reporting FAQ to help report Spam for free. This not only helps you save time (you get less Spam), but also contributes and helps the thousands of other users using the Spamcop Block List, so everyone gets less Spam.
My server is an Open Relay. What is that?
If you are a Dedicated Server or Colocation client, it is possible that your server is abused and used to send spam, and we directed you to this webpage. Please go to "What is a Mail Relay" for a detail description of this.
To fix your server and stop it being abused, follow the clear and detailed instructions here. There are instructions for over 60 versions of mail server software, including Sendmail, Qmail, Intermail, and many others.
